February 26, 2024, 7:00 pm (Good Day Sunshine State: How the Beatles Rocked Florida) You know all the songs and all the words! Learn how Florida helped shape the revolution!

Bob Kealing has chronicled the Beatles’ travels through the potboiler that was 1964 Florida. Join us as Kealing explores Good Day Sunshine State – the musical and cultural impact of The Beatles on Florida, an important part of the revolution that helped make the “Fab Four” a worldwide phenomenon, set against the historical stage for the band’s arrival; a nation dazed after the assassination of John F. Kennedy and on the precipice of the Vietnam War; a heavily segregated, conservative South; and in Florida, events that included the Cuban Missile Crisis and the arrest and imprisonment of Martin Luther King Jr. in St. Augustine.

Betty Jean Steinshouer will focus on two of her “Scribbling Women in Florida” Marjory Stoneman Douglas and
Rachel Carson. Because of Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring, we still have flora and fauna that would have been lost to DDT
and other poisons in the environment back in the 1960s. Because of The Everglades: River of Grass, by Marjory
Stoneman Douglas, we still have the only Everglades in the world.

Tommy Strowd presents The History of the Lake Worth Drainage District: Flood Control and Water Supply in Palm Beach County

Agriculture and our population face exponential expansion. This month’s speaker, Tommy Strowd, Executive Director LWDD, will tell how the plans made over 100 years ago formed a solid foundation for water management and how they continue to meet the new demands of these two diversified communities. The Lake Worth Drainage District was created on June 15, 1915, for the purposes of reclaiming, draining, and irrigating the lands within its boundary, providing water control and water supply,
protecting the lands within its boundary from the effects of water by means of the construction and maintenance of canals, levees, pumping stations, and other works, and providing improvements for the purpose of making the area habitable for both settlement and agriculture.

Historic Marker Dedication for Boynton’s Poinciana Elementary School. The school was the first Rosenwald Funded School for rural black children in Palm Beach County
